PHORID FLIES
Identification
- Have a distinctive humped back posture and small head
- Mostly black or dull brown
- Very small and look similar to fruit flies
Environment
- Are drawn to cracks and crevices that wash water or mops continually feed organic material into
- Can locate and infest resources deep underground
- Can live in broken drain lines under floors
Threats
- Can complete multiple generations of development underground in contaminated soil surrounding broken drain lines
- They breed and develop within plumbing, which can be a costly repair if they cause a leak
Treatment
- The situation has to be assessed and the source of the infestation needs to be determined
- Drain cleanings and removing as much of the organic material as possible
- Worst case when they are associated with broken drain lines, the only solution is to jackhammer the floor, repair the drain and remove and replace the contaminated soil
