FRUIT FLIES
Identification
- May have red eyes, though some are dark eyed
- Tan thorax, but their abdomen is back on top and gray underneath
Environment
- Often infest when there is ripe, rotting, or decayed fruit and produce
- They also enjoy fermented items like beer, liquor, and wine
- Can breed and develop in drains, garbage disposals, trash cans, and mop buckets
Threats
- They can contaminate food with bacteria and other pathogens
Treatment
- Fruit fly traps to help control and monitor
- Small shallow containers with an attractive fluid to catch them and zero in on a source
