GRANARY AND RICE WEEVILS
Identification
- They have a snout jutting from their head
- The rice weevil is dark brown and usually has four light-colored patches on its wing covers
- The granary weevil is uniformly dark brown in color
Environment
- The granary weevil is more common in northern states
- The rice weevil is more common in the southern states
Threats
- Tend to attack whole grains or products like popcorn, birdseed, and nuts
Treatment
- Fumigation
- Use the first-in, first-out approach for products – make sure that older products go out first and remove any with damage
